If you fly there [in summer] via Google Earth, Nikolai, Alaska appears to be no more than an airstrip with a hamlet attached to one end.But for right now, i should look like Dog Central, as it's the furthest checkpoint reached by the leaders in the 2008 Iditarod, with 93 mushers and their 16-dog teams strung out along the trail from Nikolai through Rohn and back to Rainy Pass.
And as someone with less than perfect vision myself, I didn't have any trouble figuring out who to root for this year.
