Hey - I don't have any hair!

I need to borrow some of that.

don't have any hair? i could send you some. what kind would you like? we're overrun with cat, dog, and human varieties here.

Well, I do dust mop and sweep up an entire extra cat-load every day and you'd be surprised how much Chihuahuas can shed. Chemo and radiation have done a number on my scrawny locks.

I never appear in public without a turban or hat (I look like Uncle Fester from The Addams Family). But being bald DOES save time and money on hair care products!

when i was in college i had one of the punk haircuts, even before punk was really cool. it did save a huge amount on shampoo and creme rinse, and my hair is thick and coarse enough to stand up on its own without mousse or gel when it's short, but -- alas -- the price of the haircuts more than made up for what i was saving in goop of various kinds. adding insult to injury, the haircuts looked really good on me too. i got all kinds of compliments, even from my mom.

on chihuahuas, you're right, that's one dog i never think of as a champion shedder, but now that i've seen what a houseful of short-haired cats can do, i've got a better understanding of what a pack of chihuahuas could do.

I did get a Mia Farrow, pixie look for a bit - enough to color, even. Not all chemo drugs cause hair loss. But that particular "cocktail" wasn't shrinking what it was supposed to, so I got put on stronger, hair loss stuff, as we all agreed losing my hair wasn't the worst thing that could happen to me.

I still have a faint bit of fuzz, but radiation is cleaning that up.

I haven't had a haircut in over a year. I guess that's my "stimulus" money.

the look worked well for sinead o'connor.

i looked for a clip of the time david letterman had someone bring their border collies on the show and herd ducks onto the stage, but no luck.

Have you ever been to a Highland Scottish games? Great fun - the bigger ones, you get the dogs and sheep. Smaller ones, dogs and ducks.

Great fun, great music, great food, great folks.

never been to any highland games. lots of scottish ancestors, so i've read about them, and heard tales from people who have gone.

great food? i've read about what they put in haggis....

i've been semi-active in various dog owners groups off and on over the years and have seen some sheep [and cow] herding demonstrations before. never got to see any duck herding up close yet.

i used to own a dog that was probably part border collie or australian shepherd. he loved to swim, among other things, even going under water for fairly extended times. turns out he was herding the schools of mullet that lived in my 'backyard' [back when i lived out at the beach].

I guess someone had haggis, but I never got close to it. Mostly what I saw at the smaller games was pot luck or hot dogs & hamburgers, free & open to all. The bigger ones are like the county fairs.

As soon as you walk on the premises, all the clans treat you like a long lost prodigal son/daughter and start plying you with food.

That's reason enough to go, right there.

But there are always fun events, like the dogs, dancing, music, and of course - the parade of clans with the stirring bagpipe & drum music. For anyone - especially anyone with Scottish blood - it's not to be missed!

I love border collies - SO smart and loyal. I see the Obama kids might be getting a somewhat distant relative - a Portuguese water spaniel, I think. Good choice there, too.

that would rope me in [providing they didn't then proceed to feed me haggis].

and i love bagpipes. there's a pipe and drum band here, that sometimes practices near the dog park. for quite awhile there, i timed ourr visits to the dog park to coincide with their practices.

i don't think i've ever met a portuguese water dog in person, though i've met a few owners over the internet in conjunction with some of my dog rescue activites. they sound like a wonderful family pet, medium size, medium activity level, and friendly temperaments, from what i read. they're awfully cute too.

Even though we have Chihuahuas, I love the larger dogs...we just really don't have the room or time to devote to them. Amd I'm a lousy trainer - a sucker for sad eyes.

There - I've planned your summer activities. By all means, get ye to a Highland Games or two. You'll love it. It's an easy Google search for both the large & small , or just ask the bagpipers. I bet they're going to some soon. And I promise you'll love the games. Take a blanket for sitting and enjoying and some sunblock.

The last really biggie I went to - the Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC, you could barely get to for the traffic, and there was a hefty admission. But oh, was it worth it! I went to a small "starter" games a couple years ago (with ducks) and it was all free.

free! with ducks! now that's the kind of summer activities i can get into. i'll be on the lookout for something nearby.

speaking of chihuahuas and big dogs, just as we were leaving the dog park this evening, a couple came up with their 4 dogs -- 3 chihuahuas and a golden retriever. i was reminded of some of my favorite neighbors [who have since moved], with their great dane and their miniature dachshund.

...and I bet the Chihuahuas saw themselves as full equals of the larger dogs. They're little in size, but big on 'tude.

A traveling friend once visited here wih her gorgeous Salukis. Fortunately, they had beautiful manners and ignored my yappy bunch. So embarrassing....but my Chihuahus aren't disposed to good behavior, and they're sorry trainer is mostly confined to a loud "NO". I think they all think "no" is just their name.

Please do enjoy a trip to a Games or two. I promise it will make your summer.

i love salukis. they almost don't look like dogs, though.

yep, the little ones all were out in front, pulling on their leashes, with the big one sedately bringing up the rear.
