Thursday's child has far to go

Original estimate to fix the car, labor + new parts: $500-700
....................................... + rebuild kit for all parts: about the same
....................................... + already rebuilt parts: $400-500
....................................... + used parts from junkyard: $300
....................................... + rebuild kit for only the essential to keep the car running parts: $200

Final cost [went with that last option]: $93 and change, parts and labor. I have absolutely the best car fix-it shop evah. Hunting down parts for a 20yo old car is the hardest part.

Look out world, I'm back behind the wheel again!

Damn, that's cheap.

The trick to finding parts is knowing the old guys who still run their own yards. You may have to remove them yourself, but they know where it's located.

You have to go to Alabama any more.

it was excellent. we've taken all our cars to this shop for the last 10 years or more. they're practically family now. still, i was amazed, and thrilled. i really thought the guy was pulling my leg at first.

to top it off, even when their work is cheap, it's never cheap. they know what they're doing, and they do good work. i steer business their way whenever i can.

dude, this is alabama! [well, almost] we've got one u-pull-it yard here that i've had good luck with for a couple of my cars, and for a very modest fee, they'll even pull it for you. i'm not sure what the affinity is between fire ants and junked cars, but after a couple of run-ins, i now gladly pay the extra few $ to have the proprietor do that part for me.
