Our friend Catherine (Lotus's and Mitchell's human; you've seen pics on the YDD occasionally) lives in an upstairs-plus-attic loft along with two cats. She bought one of the earliest Roombas but retired it as being not very effective and hard to maintain. If your living space is flat and level and has electrical outlets at a consistent height above the floor, you may have better luck.

i'll have to check it out, badtux. that sounds like it could be fun.

steve, there's no way i can afford even one of them, let alone the three or 4 it would take to clean up after just the fluffy dog, so there's no way i'll ever find out if they work. but i do dream....

actually, what i really want is to win the lottery so i can hire somebody to do the vacuuming for me. i don't even want to get into dumping the vacuumed-up cat fur.

:) indeed!

I never see a Roomba that I am not reminded of a toy my uncle gave me as a child (my parents would never have spent that much on something that silly). It was called a "Lightning Brainy Bug," and was shaped like a six-inch-diameter ladybug with two large wheels, an electric motor, batteries, two antennae each of which operated the brake on the wheel on the opposite side, and maybe a light or two just for grins. The LBB avoided obstacles much the way a Roomba does. On one occasion, the LBB visited all but one room in the house... with me and a couple of neighbor kids training after it. I believe Mom was glad when it finally ceased working.

Steve, Hipparchia -- the whole point of a Roomba isn't to clean your floors. It's to be uber geeky. If you don't care about being uber geeky, leave the Roomba to the geeks in lofts decorated like dorm rooms and stick with the good ole' fashioned upright :).

uber geekiness, i'd love to have it, but it's an expensive hobby.

and i think the dog would be downright traumatized by one roomba, let alone the army of them it would take to make a dent in the fur around here. i've burned up, with the help of the dog and all his fur, two uprights already, we're into shop vac territory now.

steve: yep, grandparents do this kind of stuff. my parents used to threaten us with just wait till you have kids of your own! [when they can give annoying presents to the grandkids in revenge, i'll bet].

i have to admit, that as a doting auntie, i've given those kids a few things i'd hate to have in my house if i were a parent. heh, serves my brother right for all those years when he was a pest. :)
