My late father was always concerned that a student in his secondary-school science labs would find something "interesting" to combine. It never happened, though one of the students went on eventually to a PhD in biochemistry.
biochemistry is way cool, and my first foray into it was "interesting genetic combinations." i eventually got sidetracked into metabolism instead, which is probably lucky for all the rest of the world.

not sure if biologic monkey material in the eye of the hurricane will keep you safe, but it's worth a try.
